Gli Epica sono un gruppo musicale symphonic metal olandese fondato a Reuver (frazione di Beesel) nel 2002 da Mark Jansen, ex chitarrista degli After Forever. Il nome deriva dall'omonimo disco del 2003 dei Kamelot. Nati come gruppo symphonic metal con forti tendenze gothic, gli Epica le hanno in seguito parzialmente abbandonate per sviluppare maggiormente una molteplicità di influenze, alcune delle quali ravvisabili in forma embrionale fin dagli esordi. In particolare, è a partire dal terzo album, The Divine Conspiracy, che sono divenute evidenti attitudini progressive e melodic death.
